Bungay Town 5, Sudbury Sports 2
The Black Dogs treated supporters to another five goals as they progressed into the second round of the Suffolk Senior Cup at the expense of Sudbury Sports on Saturday.
It is the first time for four years that they have won five games in a row – the last time was in 2018-19 when a five game winning run was in the middle of an unbeaten run of 13 games.
On Saturday they were up against a young side who had pace and technique, and they had to defend well at times, but the result was rarely in doubt from the second minute when Bungay took the lead.
Sudbury could not defend Jacko Williams’ free-kick well enough and Corey Thurston pulled the ball back for Alex Shreeve to guide home.
Adam Bray and Thomas Daniels forced the keeper into saves, before Sudbury’s first chance came in the 38th minute as Aiden Way blocked a close range header.
Two minutes later Bungay made it 2-0 with the best goal of the game as Ashley Varley won the ball well and it broke to Andrew Topping-Green, who curled a splendid shot into the roof of the net from 25 yards.
Any thoughts that Bungay had the game won were dispelled five minutes into the second half, however as Sudbury pulled a goal back when Anthony Price steered the ball over his own keeper in attempting to clear.
But a third Bungay goal nine minutes later put the home side back in command as Sam Fisher found Topping-Green down the left and his low cross was side-footed home by the incoming Bray.
A fourth followed in the 67th minute as Varley found Shreeve, who deftly lifted it over the keeper for his sixth goal in six games.
New signing Beau Mullett came on as a substitute and within two minutes he had made it 5-1 in the 78th minute when he fired it into the roof of the net from six yards.
The visitors hit a consolation goal in the 85th minute.
Bungay: A Way, T Daniels, J Williams, A Price, S Fisher, S Dossett, C Thurston, A Varley, A Bray (C Maloney), A Shreeve (B Mullett), A Topping-Green (L Williams).
Tomorrow Bungay visit Castle Acre Swifts for a league game, 2.30pm.
