A coffee and cocktail bar may be set for longer hours after a new licence application was submitted.

The Mayfair in Bungay, owned by Silas and Daisy Rayner, has applied to East Suffolk Council for licensing variations to stay open to 9pm.

It is currently open until 6pm.

The bid is for “alcohol (front café) extended to 21:00 everyday” and “opening hours (front café) extended to 21:00 everyday”.

The bar first opened in December last year with a temporary licence, transforming a former newsagent into an entertainment venue.

But two weeks later, the bar had closed its doors after a series of noise complaints.

The business owners said they were always planning to close in January to make a series of “structural tweaks” and apply for a full licence.

Despite concerns raised regarding about the noise from the bar and people urinating outside, the Mayfair was granted a full licence by East Suffolk Council.

Their full licence application was approved with the cafe section to be open until 6pm serving, drinks, pastries and cakes.

When they reopened in May, Mr Rayner said: "I am delighted to be open, though mildly frustrated to only be open until 6pm - but focussing on the positives, I felt at some points as if this was never going to happen."

Now, he hopes to extend it to 9pm and said: "I can't believe it's still like this nearly a year in."

The original plan was to have the coffee section open until 6pm and the bar section open until 11pm, but Mr Rayner said: "To open till 11pm we would need to build an internal wall and lots of soundproofing."

"We would now prefer to keep the build original with a small amount of soundproofing to protect our neighbour - but not open beyond 9pm."

Mr Rayner said the last six months have shown "a huge demand" for the business.

Representations may be made to the licensing authority until November 11 and can be sent by email to licensing@eastsuffolk.gov.uk.
