A new youth-centred venture to provide young people a “safe space” is beginning this week in a market town.

Run by Bungay Town Council’s youth team, The Space will offer a free hub for creative, social, adventurous and quiet activities for young people between the ages of 11 and 16.

Activities will include watching the night sky, bat detecting, going for night walks to build confidence, playing football and taking part in various other group sports.

The programme will take place at The Riverside Centre which resides by the River Waveney at the Staithe in Bungay.

Everyone involved is allowed to choose where and what they want to take part in.

Lorna Collins, youth coordinator, said: “Young people are the foundations of our society who deserve respect, love and kindness to envelop them."

She is also encouraging members of the community to become involved in the programme, whether directly or indirectly through offering time or resources.

Ms Collins said: “We’ll be diving into the community to request that people who have skills to pass on, come along and share their life stories and knowledge, and show the young people how to use tools to make practical things, create art, make clothes, film make, learn about nature, dance, cook, make music and sing.

“Young people deserve a safe space to be free to be themselves and in a nurturing environment with others”.

The programme begins today on October 2 and will continue every Wednesday.

The session for 11 to 13-year-olds runs from 5.30-7pm, and for 14 to 16-year-olds the session will run between 7.30-9pm.

“It’s about taking away fear and being in positive, fun experiences,” Ms Collins said.
