Work to replace a treasured bridge in Suffolk town has been postponed due to an invasive species of weed.

Last week, the Halesworth Millennium Green announced the work on replacing Wight Bridge had begun with contractors on site.

But Suffolk Highways has now said the Halesworth work will be delayed until "the end of September/early October".

In a post online, it said: "Whilst undertaking preparatory works for the scheme, our teams have encountered Himalayan Balsam, a highly invasive species of weed, along the riverbanks and ditches.

"If not handled properly, Himalayan Balsam can spread and potentially cause damage, so specialist care will be required to remove the weeds on site and dispose of them correctly."

Consequently, the first stage of water vole relocation has been postponed until September 23.

Suffolk Highways added: "Whilst every effort will be made for the scheme to still be completed by mid-November, there may be a slight delay.

"Thank you for your continued patience whilst these essential improvement works are completed."

White Bridge was closed in August 2022 when it was deemed unsafe. Its closure and the installation of safety fencing caused uproar in the town.
