An 18-year-old swimmer from Beccles has celebrated his second win at the Paris Paralympics and breaking a world record at the same time.
William Ellard won his first Paralympic gold in a world record time on Saturday in the men’s S14 200m freestyle final.
This follows Ellard’s first medal in Paris 2024 where he received a silver medal on the opening night of the games in S14 100m butterfly.
After winning silver, Ellard said: “I’m absolutely ecstatic.”
When he achieved gold, Ellard paid tribute to his late grandmother, Sue Tipple, who was an avid supporter.
“She died about four years ago; she was my biggest supporter when I was swimming. The last thing she ever said to me on WhatsApp was ‘see you in Paris, 2024,’” he said.

Ellard started swimming at the age of four following his sister Lily Ellard. His dad, David Ellard, said to begin with his son “wasn’t a great love of the water” and “didn’t want to go in.” With the help of his instructors, his view of swimming turned around.
Ellard was a member of Beccles Kingfishers from the age of seven, before becoming a member of St Felix Swimming Club when he was 11 years old.
“The swimming pool was his happy place,” his dad added.

He attended St Felix School on a sport scholarship until he was 16, where he continued to progress with his swimming and attend national championships.
Last year, Ellard won three medals on his international debut at the World Championships in Manchester, alongside multiple World Series medals.
His dad said: “It is phenomenal. It’s unreal.”
“It is amazing to see him. He takes it all in his stride.”
After a post on Facebook, Mr Ellard said the response from people in Beccles “has been amazing".
After taking a well-deserved rest, Ellard will take to the pool again with his coach Nick Thompson at Norwich Swans later in the year.
His father wanted to give credit to Bev Whyte, Sue Purchase, Nick Thompson, Martin Reeve, and Jacquie Marshall, alongside his other coaches and the staff at Access Sport in Lowestoft, in their support for Ellard throughout.
Jess Asato, MP for Beccles, has congratulated Ellard on his remarkable victory at the Paralympics.
She praised Ellard's perseverance and the inspiration he has provided to the people of Beccles and the nation, noting how his success exemplifies the strength and spirit of Paralympic athletes.
She added: "The whole town is so proud of you Will!".
