A philanthropic woman who adores a Suffolk town's annual fair has pledged £500 to ensure the event can go ahead ... but her generous offer has been declined.

The team behind the Stocks Fun Fair announced the event would not happen this year as the rent on the land at Beccles Quay increased to £2,000.

Organisers said they could only afford £1,500 prompting Jill Bullen to dig deep and stump up the rest.

But the council said: "Thanks, but no thanks."

And the 79-year-old is not happy.

Every year, for more than 60 years Jill has looked forward to Stocks Fun Fair which runs over four days.

The fair was originally run by the late Bert Stocks at the Beccles carnival and is now run by his grandchildren.

This year, the fair was hoping to run on the bank holiday weekend.

Sally Stocks, Bert's grand-daughter in law, said she was disappointment over the rent hike: "We are just a small family-run business and we can't afford those prices."

Jill has been attending the fair for sixty years.

"I have loved the fair since I was 16," she said. "It makes people happy and I want Beccles to be a happy place."

Sally added: "We cannot possibly take her offer up but it was very kind of her. As for next year at this stage it is unclear - we would need the rent to come down."

Her donation was turned down by Beccles town council but they did not comment further.
