Asbestos debris has been left on a children's play park just metres from a school after vandals smashed up some garages.

The hazardous waste comes from King’s Road Garages, owned by Bungay Town Council, next to the park opposite Bungay High School.

The vandalised structures have been taped off to prevent people from getting too close and the same has been done with the waste on the park.

However, residents have raised concerns about whether enough has been done to protect people.

One person living nearby, who asked not to be named, said: "It is laughable really that the waste has just been taped off.

"I don't understand how on earth anyone would think that would stop somebody from touching it.

"We all know what children are like. You tell them not to do something and often that motivates them to do exactly that, totally unaware of the dangers.

"I think the council have not taken this seriously enough and the waste needs to be cleared from the park as soon as possible before anybody is harmed."

The town council says the waste removal will be discussed in a meeting this week.

A spokeswoman said: "Since the town council were alerted to the vandalism to the garages we have cordoned off the areas.

"The council have been seeking quotes for the removal of the asbestos and a decision will be made on Thursday at our community assets and services committee."

Suffolk police have been made aware of the damage to the garages and are investigating, encouraging anyone with information to get in touch.

But East Suffolk Council say that the health risk from the asbestos is minimal.

A spokesman said: “While the risk of exposure from the release of fibres is minimal and does not present an immediate health risk, the council has, following notification of its presence on Tuesday, instructed the immediate removal of the material by a licenced asbestos disposal company.

"We will also be arranging for the garage block area to be fenced off in order to prevent any further disturbance.”
