A Broads footbridge closed for more than a decade could be set for a new lease of life.

The bridge at the Staithe in Loddon which crosses the River Chet to the Millennium Garden was closed by South Norfolk Council due to safety concerns.

It had been open and used by the community since as early as the 1960s until it was closed more than a decade ago.

But at a Loddon Town Council meeting, it was decided that the Love Loddon Community Group Councillors will meet with the South Norfolk Council asset officer on June 7, to discuss plans to replace or repair it.

Beneath the visibly broken wooden bridge is a water pipe, owned by Anglian Water, which has proven a complication for the authorities in repairing it.

A South Norfolk Council spokesman said: "South Norfolk Council is working with the Environment Agency and the Broads Authority to find a way forward regarding the bridge.

"The council is also looking for a contractor to do the work once an agreement has been reached as to how the work will be carried out.”
