A town's mayor has hit out at Barclays after the bank chain announced it will be closing its branch in the town later this year.

The announcement comes two months after HSBC closed its branch in Beccles, much to the disappointment of many.

Beccles does still have Lloyds and a Nationwide in the town centre, but there are concerns the elderly are being neglected.

As a result of Barclay's closure announcement, the town mayor, Christine Wheeler, has said she is going to "challenge" the banking giant.

She said: "Beccles Town Council is very unhappy and sorry that Barclays has decided to close their branch in Beccles.

"We are working with Peter Aldous MP and Caroline Topping, leader of East Suffolk Council, to challenge Barclays about how their services will be provided in the town once the branch closes.”

Mr Aldous had worked with the town council to seek reassurances from the other town banks in December last year after HSBC announced it will be shutting its doors.

But in a statement last week, Barclays said their Beccles branch will close on November 24.

The statement also said the decision to close the branch comes after internal research showed that "19 customers use this branch regularly as the only way to do their banking" and just "19pc of this branch’s customers have used nearby branches in the last 12 months".

It also read: "Back when we opened this branch, visiting us in person was one of the only ways to do your banking.

"Now, as there are lots of ways to manage your money without even leaving your home, we’re seeing many customers choosing to bank using our app, and online or telephone banking.

"This has had a big impact on the number of customers coming in to see us."

The statement says that people who bank with Barclays can still use nearby Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth branches, or even do their banking at the WHS Smith post office or the Rigbourne Hill post office.
