Work is underway on the transformation of a children’s play area at a town's common.

Once complete, the new-look play area at Beccles Common will feature a basket swing, a cradle swing for toddlers, a me-to-you swing, a cargo climbing net, a toddler climbing unit with a slide, and a junior climbing unit with a climbing wall and slide.

Beccles mayor, Christine Wheeler, said: “Beccles Town Council, as trustee of Beccles Fenland Charity Trust, are delighted that this joint project will provide a modern new play facility.

"We are happy that the natural materials being used are a good fit for this rural site.”

Designed by eibe play Ltd, and aimed at toddlers and juniors, the play area should be open in time for the summer holidays.

The existing play area will be closed for the duration of work, which began on Wednesday, May 24

Katie Graham, East Suffolk Council's cabinet member for communities, leisure and tourism, said: “I’m delighted to see work get underway on the transformation of this popular play area.”

The refurbishment at Beccles Common has been made possible thanks to a partnership between East Suffolk Council and Beccles Town Council.

The town has seen several upgrades to play and open areas in the last few years.

Beccles Skatepark underwent a huge revamp and got a new design in 2019 after users campaigned from 2015 for a transformation of the site.

Last year the Beccles Quay's play area saw upgraded facilities, part of a £250,000 investment, opened on Thursday, June 2.

That grand re-opening coincided with the start of the town's Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

The refurbishment was partly funded through a range of grants, including from Tesco Community Grants, the Alan Boswell Group Charitable Trust and Elfrede Brambley-Crawshaw's 2018-19 mayoral appeal.
