The owners of a Chinese restaurant and takeaway in a market town are "proud" and "delighted" after receiving a five-star food hygiene rating having only taken it on in December.

The Pearl River in Beccles was taken over by Mandy Chen and Ricky Chen after the previous owners retired after 30 years.

Mrs Chen has said she is "really proud" to have been issued a five-star food hygiene rating by East Suffolk Council and the Food Standards Agency and her family is happy having settled into the town well.

She said: "Moving to Beccles in December from Liverpool, where we were for 20 years, has been challenging, but we have settled really well.

"The people in the town have been very welcoming, we enjoy the town and areas around it, it is quiet and peaceful.

"The five-star award in the latest inspection shows the hard work we have put into making the business successful, I am proud and delighted."

Mr and Mrs Chen have a daughter and Mrs Chen has her parents living with them.

The Pearl River is situated at 3 Blyburgate, Beccles NR34 9TA, opposite The Wine Vaults Bar.
