Beccles Town boss Mick Broxup believes a lack of urgency cost his side three valuable points against Sheringham at College Meadow on Saturday.

The Wherrymen remain on the fringe of an Anglian Combination Premier Division relegation battle after their 1-1 draw with the Shannocks, with a tricky trip to Spixworth this weekend.

“After the previous two committed performances this was a non-event, when with a bit more get up and go we could and should have taken all three points from a poor Sheringham side,” said Broxup.

“The conditions didn’t help with a swirling wind and heavy surface playing their parts in stifling any decent football.

“It was a scrappy game and it should be seen as a couple of points dropped, as Sheringham tired quickly at the end and the game was ours for the taking had we shown a bit more commitment and composure.”

After a colour clash cock-up delayed the start, the game was played in a similar vein, with neither side able to reached any great heights.

It was somewhat of a shock when the first goal did arrive, as Town entered Sheringham’s final third for the first time.

Kev Waterman teed up Ant Martin who miscued his shot, but it fell at the feet of Damon Bensley and he fired in his 12th goal of the season.

Suddenly everything perked up and Alan Remblance was put clean through but only chipped the ball into the keeper’s hands.

This proved costly as Sheringham hit back quickly. It seemed to happen in slow motion as a mazy dribble went uncontested and Sheringham found themselves on the edge of our box and a turn and shot from Kristian Gleave found the bottom corner.

It was hoped the second period would see more desire from the home side but it only happened in brief spells.

Bensley was providing the spark and he rounded the keeper but, going wide, lifted his effort over while Bensley again rounded the keeper but was unable to set up Remblance, who then pulled a shot wide when well placed.

The same player also saw an effort saved from six yards and headed over from a corner.

A couple of dangerous looking tackles saw no action taken by the official and Beccles’ final chance fell to Elliott Whiteside, but he shot wide.
